NASHEN MOODLEY
FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
Whilst the film landscape continues to change, the cinema experience remains one of the most vital ways to engage with the wider world. In an increasingly fragmented society, we can sit together in a dark room full of friends and strangers to experience something entirely new. From the most exciting new filmmakers you'll discover for the first time, to an inventive take from a master director, this year's Festival is a celebration of contrast.
In a year that has highlighted the inequalities facing women across society, we're pleased to see that six out of 12 Official Competition films this year are directed by women, and to once again bring you some incredible work in our third year of the Europe! Voices of Women in Film program strand.
This year, on behalf of the Festival staff I would also like to welcome our new Festival Chair Deanne Weir. We all look forward to working with her over the coming years.
Since 1954, Sydney Film Festival has brought over 9000 of the best films from around the globe to Australian audiences. Over the years, much has changed in the film landscape, and indeed the world. What remains constant is the need for understanding – of both our similarities and differences across cultures and life experiences.
We warmly invite you to celebrate our 65th Festival.
We acknowledge Australia’s First Nations People as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land, and pay respect to the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, upon whose Country SFF are based.
We honour the storytelling and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia.
